KL student follows in family footsteps
December 10, 2019
More than 30 years after his parents met at Canning College, Gordon, who is from Kuala Lumpur, will become the fourth member of his family to enrol with us.
He is following in the footsteps of his father and mother, who both completed Year 12 at Canning in 1989, and his sister Winnie, who studied the Certificate IV before completing a Diploma of Commerce in 2017. Winnie recently finished her Commerce degree at the University of Western Australia.
Gordon’s father Lau Boon Kok, who also studied at UWA, and mother Soo Bee Leng, who went to Curtin University, have retained a fondness for Perth and visit regularly.
“It was our first time living in a different country and it was fantastic,” Lau Boon Kok said of his introduction to Perth in 1988. “You feel so free. We loved the way of life in Australia and the teachers were so friendly. They made us feel at home.”
Winnie had a similar experience when she followed in her parents’ footsteps almost 30 years later.
“It’s a different experience to Malaysia. The teachers are like friends,” she said.
Gordon will start the Certificate IV in University Access Program with us in January.
The successful completion of the Certificate IV provides a guaranteed place in Canning’s Diploma of Commerce, which articulates into year two of either the UWA or Curtin University Bachelor of Commerce.
Successful Certificate IV students can also apply for first year undergraduate entry into a range of courses at Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and Murdoch University.
Entry into the Certificate IV is available in January and July and the course runs for 20 weeks.
