As part of their Canning College experience, a group of Year 10 and Year 11 students took part in a careers excursion designed to give them a better understanding of the types of jobs that may be of interest to them in the future.
They were guided by Economics Teacher Shehan and Teacher and Care Group Advisor Emily, who provided her thoughts on a successful day out.
Our excursion took place across the city, with our first stop at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre for the Careers Expo. Students were free to explore the Expo, collect resources and speak to the exhibitors. In the lead up to the excursion, students researched the exhibitors and planned questions they wanted to ask. There were representatives from universities, colleges, workaway programs, employers, industry associations and more.
Next, we stopped into StudyPerth, the peak industry body for international education in Western Australia. StudyPerth is a fantastic resource for international students. They prioritise supporting a positive student experience and offer a range of different supports.
Students can access free career support, including one-on-one career advise sessions, professional development training programs and the Careers Connect Portal. Study Perth also offers wellbeing support services. These include 24/7 safety and wellbeing assistance via their partner Sonder and legal advice through their partner Circle Green.
StudyPerth arrange various events throughout the year including job fairs, workshops, cultural and end-of-term celebrations, and day trips. The Student Hub is open seven days a week and students can sit in there to work, socialise and play games. It is a very friendly and welcoming environment. They offer free printing and, at times, have free food.
The Jobs and Skills Centre is another excellent resource. Their services include career counselling, education and training advice, job search support, job application support and job interview support. They have multiple offices around Perth and students can make an appointment to talk to support staff.
The last stop on our excursion was the WA Museum, Boola Bardip. Students took part in the Enterprising Entrepreneurs Workshop. We went into the galleries and learnt about local Western Australian entrepreneurs and their inventions. Students were given a task to invent a product to fix a problem they were given. They were asked to create an elevator pitch to sell their invention to the rest of the group. The activity concluded with students choosing who they wanted to invest in. It was wonderful seeing the students pitch their ideas confidently.
Throughout the day, students were positive, engaged, responsible and respectful, and they really embraced this out-of-classroom learning experience. It was a pleasure to take them out and see them represent Canning College brilliantly.
