Chaplain providing student support

I’ve often been asked what is it that I do in my role as a YouthCARE chaplain. I’ve also been told by students that my title should be Professional Best Friend.
I like this as a job title because it sums up the relationship between a chaplain and the students they engage with on a daily basis.
But what exactly do I do as the Canning College chaplain?
In simple terms, I provide care for the social, emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing of students, families and staff. So, while my main responsibility is to the students at Canning College, my assistance reaches beyond this group.
I am one of many chaplains in school communities across Australia. Chaplains are available to listen compassionately, refer to extra help where necessary and run programs which create positive cultures and experiences within schools.
At Canning College, our unique diversity and student identity is celebrated. Chaplaincy positively impacts on this by helping students succeed through encouragement and support.
In Term 1 of 2025, we have made a fantastic start to the year with many programs starting as a way of supporting students and encouraging them to participate in activities that enhance their College experience.
Some highlights of the term have included cooking classes, a Tea Day, sports sessions and a celebration of cultures during Harmony Week.
On Tea Day, students enjoyed various flavours from around the world as well as some of the brews enjoyed in Aussie households.
Harmony Week was a celebration of all that is great about cultural interaction. Students were encouraged to wear traditional clothing, and to share information about their cultural background and home countries.
Sports activities included try-a-new-sport sessions, which gave students opportunities to engage in volleyball, handball and bocce.
There will be lots more fun activities that promote positive health and wellbeing when we return for Term 2.
