High schools link from Perth to Cambodia

Canning College will work with high schools in Cambodia to help students achieve their academic aims.

Canning College has agreed to work collaboratively with two prominent international schools in Cambodia as part of a broad sister-school arrangement.

Principal Leila Bothams signed separate Memorandums of Understanding with Westland International School and Albert International Academy that include international education agency Springboard4Education as a co-signatory.

The agreements were signed on July 29 at Optus Stadium during a graduation ceremony for Cambodian and Laos students. These students are studying the WA Certificate of Education Australian Tertiary Admission Rank program delivered in Cambodia via a relationship with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.

Through these new agreements, Canning College expects to welcome Cambodian high school students onto campus and into a supportive international study environment that prepares them for entry into Australia’s leading universities.

Ms Bothams said the sister-school relationships would provide multiple opportunities to work together for the mutual benefit of the high schools in Cambodia, Canning College and Springboard4Education.

“It’s so important that a relationship like this is beneficial to all parties and also to current and prospective students,” she said.

“We will work together to establish shared cultural and educational understandings, including the development of a teacher professional learning program and student study tours.

“I visited both Westland International School and Albert International Academy this year and was very impressed. As we get to know more about each other’s institutions, we’ll create a stronger partnership that I’m sure will continue for years to come.”

During a visit to Canning College, Westland Chief Executive Officer Mr Than Soklim said he was very pleased to have signed the agreement with Canning College.

“This is a very good agreement between Westland International School and Canning College,” he said.

“I feel so happy because we now have a partner, in Canning College, to connect with parents and students, who will be supported when they study in Australia.”

Canning College is a Western Australia State Government Independent Public School with a special focus on international education.

In 2025, around 30% of the student population is local/domestic with a significant majority of students on international education visas.

Most Canning College graduates enrol in degree programs at Western Australian universities, although some choose eastern states institutions and others further their studies overseas.

Curtin University, which is next door to Canning College, The University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, Edith Cowan University and The University of Notre Dame Australia are common destinations of choice for graduates.

Canning College delivers high school programs at Years 10, 11 and 12 (WA Certificate of Education – Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), the WA Universities’ Foundation Program, which is popular with international students, as well as a Certificate IV in University Access Program and a Diploma of Commerce, which is equivalent to first year Bachelor of Commerce/Business programs.

All programs are available to international and domestic students.
