WHY CHOOSE INTENSIVE ENGLISH AT CANNING COLLEGE

Intensive English assists students in improving their verbal and written English language capabilities in preparation for a Canning College pathway-to-university program.

A great education at Canning College starts with a good understanding of the English language. While many new students speak and read English well enough to immediately enter Canning College’s standard academic programs, others benefit from starting their journey to university in the Intensive English Program.

Intensive English is delivered in a supportive environment in which students can immediately feel confident about using English, regardless of their level of understanding. This approach, combined with the frequent feedback of specialist English teachers, accelerates learning to ensure students achieve their language goals as scheduled.

LANGUAGE LEVELS

Intensive English is suitable for international and domestic students, who require English language improvement.

Some Canning College students arrive from countries where English is a common language, or they have been learning in an environment where English is the language of instruction. Most often they are ready to tackle standard academic programs from the moment they arrive.

Students who have a more basic understanding of English are also able to start at the College without delay by enrolling in an intensive English program. Following a free, in-house English test, student English capabilities are assessed by a language expert, who determines the most suitable intensive program, and the number of study weeks required. The expected time for completion may be adjusted based on the rate of progress before a student moves into a standard academic program.

THE TEACHING AND LEARNING PROGRAM

Students complete up to 16 hours per week of intensive English instruction with the balance of their timetable engaging in other essential curriculum content.  This gives students a broader understanding of language and improves their capacity to use English in different contexts and apply it more confidently when studying various subjects.

The weekly program comprises:

  • 16 hours studying intensive English with a specialised teacher
  • 4.5 hours of supported Science and 4.5 hours of supported Mathematics in mainstream classes to provide students with the foundational knowledge required for senior school subjects in these key learning areas
  • In Year 10, studies of Health and Physical Education, Computing and an Activity session comprising food technologies and visual art.

We also offer students programs, guidance and support services that help them adjust to living and studying in a new country. Experiential learning and excursions to historical landmarks, museums and art galleries are important features of our intensive English program.

COST

The cost for local students varies according to year level and length of time in the program. Families are provided details at the time of their child’s enrolment.
