When your Year 12 results haven’t quite turned out as well as you had hoped, what can you do?
Paul, who grew up in Kalamunda, was faced with this dilemma what seems like a lifetime ago.
“I was quite disappointed,” he said after receiving news that his final results weren’t high enough to get him into university. “I got really down on myself having not done as well as I wanted. But I was doggedly determined to do better.”
Having experienced the public and private school system, he wasn’t sure what to do next.
But when his mum saw an advertisement for Canning College, his education journey started anew.
“The teachers and the support from staff members were great,” he said on a recent visit to campus from his home in Sydney. “It’s a lovely melting pot of cultures and different ways of thinking. I made friends from different parts of the world and even learned some conversational Indonesian.”
The seed that was sown in the late-1990s helped Paul on his way to achieving great things and in places he never imagined.
After completing Year 12 at Canning College, he accepted an offer to study at the University of Melbourne but later returned to Perth to complete a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Business Law at Curtin University. He was accepted into the graduate program at global accountancy firms PwC and later at Deloitte, and delivered programs with global insurance companies Suncorp, IAG and Zurich.
But his appetite for learning, which had been rekindled at Canning College, continued and his career turned in a different direction when he studied a Master of Education (Learning and Leadership) at the University of Technology Sydney.
Work has also taken Paul to India and South-East Asia. And, as it turns out, the sky really is the limit because these days he is a Program Change Manager at a major airline.
Not that he has stopped learning. In fact, Paul has recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Change Management and will next year start a Master of Business Administration at the University of New South Wales.
