Student achievements recognised at mid-year presentation

Student achievements reflect successful studies

Canning College has marked an important milestone in the academic year with its 2025–26 Mid-Year Presentation Evening, recognising the achievements of students from the Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Program (WAUFP) and the Certificate IV in University Access Program (UAP).

The event brought together students, teachers and staff to acknowledge both academic performance and the broader journeys undertaken by students studying far from home.

This year’s WAUFP cohort included students from Cambodia, China, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, while students in the Certificate IV in University Access Program group represented the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Nepal and Bhutan. The range of nationalities reflected a diverse international group that forms part of the college community.

Principal Leila Bothams’ address focused on the significance of student achievements within the context of their experiences studying abroad.

“It’s a very special night for you,” she said. “It’s a special occasion for your families and it’s also a very special occasion for teachers and support staff at Canning College. You’ve achieved something quite remarkable, and you have done it in a relatively short time. You’ve done something that we admire and respect.”

Ms Bothams spoke of the challenges students had faced in adapting to a new environment, often far removed from familiar surroundings.

“A short time ago, you left your countries, your homes, and some of you left your families. You left pretty much everything that was familiar to you,” she said. “You came to a new country, a new city, a new school… many of you were learning in a new language and learning a new curriculum. You had to make new friends, and that is an awful lot to have to deal with and to process.”

She noted that the cohort’s success reflected more than academic ability.

“You didn’t just survive, you thrived,” she said. “This reflects your resilience, your adaptability and your capabilities. They are strong skills and attributes that put you well ahead of some of your peers. You’ve done something that few other young people will ever do.”

Among the awards presented on the night, the Top Student Award was presented to WAUFP student Katie from Korea in recognition of her academic performance and consistent application throughout the program.

The Community Award was presented to Jedisha from Singapore. A College Student Leader, she was recognised for her contribution to student life and her active support of her peers.

Student speaker Andy, also from Korea, delivered a valedictory address reflecting on the shared experiences of the group. He spoke about the academic demands of the program as well as the challenges of adjusting to a new country and learning environment.

“My teachers were easy going, the students were friendly and the other staff at the College were super supportive,” he said.

As part of the evening, teachers were invited to share brief reflections on individual students. These comments highlighted the progress made over the course of the program, offering insight into both academic development and personal growth, as well as the role of staff in supporting students through their studies.

The WA Universities’ Foundation Program provides an accelerated pathway to university, typically completed within 12 months. Students who complete the program progress to universities in Western Australia and across Australia, depending on their results and chosen courses.

Canning College offers multiple intakes throughout the year, allowing students to begin their studies at different points in the academic calendar.

The Mid-Year Presentation Evening serves as a point of recognition for graduating mid-year students, marking both their academic achievements and the challenges they have overcome along the way.
