Student leaders in focus

Student leaders selected for 2024

The identification and appointment of student leaders, and their development as individuals, has become a key Canning College focus in recent years.

In 2024, the student leadership team consists of five Student Ambassadors and the Student Representative on the Board.

Adam, who is from Malaysia, acts as a voice for students and attends the College’s Board meetings in his role as student representative. Five other students have been appointed to positions as Student Ambassadors. They are Viola, who is from China, Ilya (Australia), Zoe (Vietnam), Clive (Singapore) and Jaslene (Hong Kong).

While Canning College aims to help every student achieve their academic potential while developing personal traits such as confidence, the student leadership team takes on additional responsibilities. The leaders are also given opportunities to further develop their interpersonal, leadership, public speaking and problem-solving skills.

Deputy Principal Tony Herbert said student leaders were selected after staff had first identified the most suitable candidates.

“We’re very fortunate at Canning College that we attract high calibre students who have academic capacity and are also willing to help and support their fellow students,” he said.

“Our student leaders are selected because they are seen as individuals who want to grow and learn, and contribute to the College community by helping others. We have seen these attributes in our student leaders in previous years. I have no doubt this will continue to be the case with our current leaders.

“I’ve already seen evidence that our leaders are willing to help out in any way they can. It might be to help lift the spirits of another student who may be lacking confidence or who is homesick. I’ve also seen our leaders start conversations to break the ice with new students.

“Student leaders benefit from feeling good about themselves and the roles they play in the College. They also engage in personal development opportunities and receive advice and guidance that contributes to them becoming more confident in everything they do.”
