Student leaders set high standards

Student leaders rise to the challenge

Canning College took a new direction in 2025, which resulted in our biggest group of Student Leaders.

In previous years, teachers and staff have identified and nominated potential student leaders before nominees were involved in a student-voting process.

This year, nominees were challenged to speak to fellow students during a lunchtime pitch held in the cafeteria. Some speeches were political, others emotional, but all were impressive.

It is not easy to take hold of a microphone in front of people you have known for just a few weeks and tell them about your aspirations. But this is exactly what all nominees did.

Staff were so impressed with the calibre of the students that all nominees were assigned a role, either as a Student Leader or a member of the Supporting Leadership Team, combining for a total of 20 leaders.

Adam, who is from Malaysia, retained his position as Student Representative on the Board.

The Student Leadership Group will act as liaison between students and staff to ensure the College continues to meet student expectations. Leaders will also assist staff with some duties, while being provided self-development opportunities.

The leaders are culturally diverse, and are drawn from 10 countries, while they also have different interests and are pursuing various academic goals.

Among them are students aiming to become doctors, conservationists, artists, engineers, accountants, international relations specialists, forensic scientists, and many other professions. Some students are yet to decide their career goal and will use their time at Canning College to consider their university options.

Amongst their motivations for joining Canning College were the opportunity to study in a culturally diverse setting, a focus on student wellbeing, high teaching standards, university-style environment, relaxed atmosphere and caring College community.
