From Foundation to Veterinary Medicine: Wei Charts His Path to Success
Choosing the right study pathway can be challenging, especially for international students balancing their interests, strengths and long-term career goals. For Canning College alumnus Wei, that journey evolved into a clear direction that has taken him to Queensland where he started working in a veterinary clinic.
Originally from Malaysia, Wei studied the Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Program (WAUFP) at Canning College in 2020. Arriving during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, he faced an unfamiliar learning environment and changes to everyday life. But the concerns he may have had as a teenager in a new country were quickly overcome.
“Everyone was really friendly and supportive,” he said. “It was a challenging time, but I was able to get through it with the help available.”
Building a Pathway into Veterinary Medicine
Wei’s ambition to study veterinary medicine was not shaped by a traditional background with animals. Apart from keeping fish as pets, his early interests were grounded in science, particularly public health, disease and medicine. Over time, these passions merged into a clear career goal, which was focused on animal wellbeing.
With this in mind, he selected subjects that would support his future studies, including biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. At this stage of his journey, the academic guidance he received at Canning College was invaluable in helping him stay focused and confident in his decision. If he had any concerns, he could raise them with helpful staff members.
“If I had doubts, I could reach out to my teachers, and they would give advice based on my situation, which was great,” he said.

Having previously studied in Malaysia and Singapore, Wei noticed a distinct difference in the educational approach at Canning College. He was suited to an environment that offered flexibility and freedom while maintaining academic focus.
“It felt quite free, but at the same time there was enough structure to keep you focused,” he said.

Progression to Murdoch University
After his studies at Canning College, Wei completed a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University where he rose to the challenge of tertiary studies.
“It’s more self-directed, and everyone is managing their own schedules,” he said. “But it’s also a good opportunity to meet new people and grow.”
Embracing Life in Western Australia
Life in Perth was not all about study for Wei, who made the most of his time in Western Australia by exploring its natural beauty. From coastal beaches to hiking trails and camping trips, his experiences helped shape a well-rounded student life.
“Road trips is one of the best things that ever happened to me in Perth,” he said.
