LOCAL STUDENTS - FREQUENTLY ASKED Questions

International education … for locals, too

From 2024, Canning College is open to local and international students. While we have focused exclusively on the education of international students over the last five years, previously from 1982 to 2018 we enrolled both local and international students. In the same way students benefited from studying and interacting with their local and international peers, we believe the change to our enrolment policy will enhance the student experience at Canning College.

Canning College is an Independent Public School. Local/domestic students pay fees and charges that are similar to other WA State Government schools. Indicative costs and charges are published in program handbooks, which can be downloaded from within the relevant program section.

Canning College is unique. As a college for senior students, Canning has a well-established history of providing students with pathways to leading universities. Our students come from all over the world and a strong international community culture is built into our campus life. Students are encouraged to attend events and activities that enrich their college experience and strengthen intercultural awareness and understanding.

No, Canning College does not have a geographic boundary for student enrolments. Students from any part of Western Australia can apply to study with us.

Compulsory aged local/domestic students may apply to enrol into Year 10, Year 11 or Year 12 in 2024 if:

  • they are an Australian citizen. That is, if they were born in Australia and at least one parent was a permanent resident when the child was born.
  • they or their parents are a permanent resident; or
  • they or their parents are a temporary resident with an enrolment entitlement.

Mature age students can also enrol in Year 11 and Year 12 programs.

A student 20 years or older on 1 March is considered a mature age student and may enrol at Canning College in Year 11 and Year 12. Our college is well suited to mature age students seeking to study the WACE ATAR Year 11 and 12 programs. Mature age students cannot enrol in Year 10 studies.

Mature age students should find Canning College’s supportive adult learning environment suited to their needs. We recommend that mature age students studying ATAR courses for university entry complete at least two subjects as this will strengthen their preparation for studies at tertiary level.

Canning College is well suited to home schooled students preparing for university studies. Our ATAR courses, adult learning environment and support services assist student transition from home-schooling to studies at university.

Local/domestic students (including Permanent Residents and certain Temporary Resident visa holders) who meet the relevant entry requirements and have completed no more than two years of high school education in Australia, may also be eligible to enrol in the Foundation Program.

Our program comprises the five mandated learning areas of Western Australian Curriculum for Year 10: Mathematics, English, Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences (“MESH” subjects) and Health and Physical Education. Students will study two hours of Physical Education, one hour of Health Education and the equivalent of five hours of each of the MESH subjects each week. The equivalent of one hour per week in each MESH subject is dedicated to enrichment and extension programs. These may include, for example, introduction to economics, financial literacy, ethics, mathematics extension, participation in academic competitions, STEM problem solving and intercultural studies. The balance of the Year 10 program will focus on careers and pathway planning and experiential learning.
